Oel ngati kameie!

Which means “I see you” in the Na’vi language.

I can’t believe how I just wasted my first post of the year commenting on a worthless piece of blog post from some paranoid mother who thinks that Isaac Newton would play a DS.

My first post should totally be on the most awesome movie right now – James Cameron’s AVATAR!!!

Yea I know it’s a topic beaten to death but I WANT TO DO SOME BEATING TOO DAMMIT!

2009

Written and Directed by James Cameron

Starring Sam Worthington, Zoe Zaldana, Sigourney Weaver, Stephen Lang and Michelle Rodrigeuz

That’s a terribly misleading picture I ninja’d btw. It’s still pretty, though.

In fact, everything about this movie is pretty. I don’t care if it has the most cliched, boring and overrated story, it’s just sooo pretty, and we all know that’s all that matters, right? Don’t lie.

Well I’m not gonna really summarize this movie, cuz c’mon, which tax paying citizen of the world hasn’t watched it? Or at least heard of the story?

You haven’t? Well you suck. And start paying your taxes.

Anyways, in simple terms, the story of Avatar is thus:

Get it get it??

Yes.

Well, there has been many criticism of the lack of originality in this movie, and I really dislike how people keep dissing this movie solely base on that fact. We had been given enough unoriginal Hollywood junk and you gotta at least give the film some credit for being such an amazing unoriginal movie! Besides, all movies share similar themes and plots to another movie at least! Every content, although itself might be an original, is built upon the same themes that occur in our lives so that the audience will be able to relate to it.

The amount of details and creativity that goes into the movie is astounding. The creatures, the colors, the atmosphere…almost every scene is breathtaking. The soundtrack helped a lot too. It creates this atmosphere that is so epic that it’s no surprise people suffered from post-avatar depression…

I love the emotional expressions of Neytiri (Zoe Saldana) the most. In certain parts, her acting just makes me tear up. The motion capture was done so well that I could really believe that they are real beings.

So amazing…

Well anyways, it’s one of the most amazing movies I’ve watched, AND I’VE WATCHED QUITE A FEW MOVIES. I went in the cinema expected to be entertained and boy, was I entertained. In terms of “it blew me away”, my brains were blew so far away I couldn’t talk straight for a few days after. Don’t know if I’d got it back yet.

My Verdict: 9/10 ★★★★★★★★★☆

(That said though, I’m rooting for Hurt Locker for the Oscars.)

And here I shall end with my avatarification:

I’m ready for Pandora babeh~!

2012 The World As We Know It

Is coming to an endddd!!!

2012

(^^ Well, that was something amusing that came up on google images when I searched 2012.  )

the real 2012

2009

Written and Directed by Roland Emmerich

Starring John Cusack,  Amanda Peet, Danny Glover, Thandie Newton and Woody Harrelson.

I was gonna watch it the day after the day before the yesterday of two days before the day after tomorrow, but the theatres were all packed – even the midnight showings. So we went to watch it today at noon, and there were like only 10 other people or so. How weird.

Although 2012 isn’t a movie that I desperately wanted to watch, I was pretty curious about what Roland Emmerich, who also happens to be the directer for Independence Day and The Day After Tomorrow, is gonna do with the subject. He’s a pretty damn awesome director, especially with Independence Day, man I loved that movie.

The movie as a whole was pretty predictable, but c’mon, what else can you do with a subject of Armageddon? The plot wasn’t anything we haven’t seen before – in fact, the whole movie is a congregation of various archetypes of disaster movies. There is always a hero, and the hero will always have some family problem, most of the time with the ex-wife and kids and the ex-wife’s new husband, and there are always the nice guys in the government versus the bad guys in the government, and not to forget there is always a crazy guy who gets to say I told you so. Then the rest of the movie will be buildings falling, earth shaking, debris, tsunamis, people running around in circles, more debris, crying, screaming, warm and fuzzy dialogues and everyone gets bloody and dirty.

A pretty mommy with kids - a heartwrenching cliche

However, even if it’s a cliche and predictable story, the director delivered it well. Throughout the whole movie, I felt as if I was in one of those 4D movie rides because the CG was so well done it draws you into the movie and make you experience it. It’s one of those cinema movies where you can’t enjoy it at home as well as in the cinema because the whole experience is much contributed by the wide screen and surround sound (unless you have a home theatre system, in which case I hate you you suck). I was on the edge of my seat most of time and it was an awesome ride.

Some critics say that movies such as this and Transformers are merely CGI diarrhea and nothing more. I agree but I don’t see why that is bad when you can have such amazing and believable CGI?

It’s not that the story is bad, it’s actually a pretty solid story and plot, it just feels like we’ve all see it before. Imo, it’s better that way for this movie, you don’t wanna think too much. You just wanna shut down your brain and go on a roller-coaster ride, which is what you’ll be getting from the movie. Don’t expect deep meanings and revelations in this movie, but good entertainment, humor, solid acting and you get to watch the world getting toasted and drowned in the most magnificent way – what other reasons do you need to watch this film? None imo. I would totally just watch it a few times more.

My Verdict: 8.25/10 ★★★★★★★★¼☆

Review: Burn After Reading

Burn After Reading

2008
Written and Directed by Joel and Ethan Coen
Starring George Clooney, Frances McDormand, Brad Pitt, John Malkovich, Tilda Swinton and Richard Jenkins

First of all – I regret that I didn’t get to catch it at the theaters when it first came out. FREAKIN SCHOOL!

I love Tilda Swinton, I love Frances McDormand, everyone loves Brad Pitt and I’m the one in everyone so I love Brad Pitt as well = enough reason to love the film. I rented it yesterday and watched it right away because darn, had I been wanting to watch this for a long time.

Imho, the kernel of this movie lies within the characters. In the DVD commentary, the Coens said that they tailored every character to the actors they had in mind. Which really shows, because the whole story revolves around these people, these characters, and the plot is able to proceed because of them and their actions. Every character is so clearly defined, and not by some typical stereotype – that’s way too easy – but rather, awkward and queer people that are so unnatural, that they seem to be the most natural thing ever! Well, other than the fact that Brad Pitt is a complete dork. Bravo, wardrobe designer, bravo. That’s a feat right there. Lemme help you add it to your portfolio.

Brad Pitt in Burn after reading

It’s pretty awesome how the plot goes. Awesome as in WTF!?  The beginning was kinda slow, introducing the characters and such, but once the stage is set and the players are ready, the plot unfolds in the most unexpected way. The witty dialogue is a big plus to the film. Although I don’t really know much of the Coen’s type of writing style, this is definitely something unique and enjoyable. This reminds me a little of Pulp Fiction, which is one of my favorite films ever. It doesn’t follow the typical Jolly Woods type of scenarios. Often, you’ll find yourself wondering what the heck just happened, why is this happening, and whether the whole thing is a blunder on the writer’s part, which I can assure you, it’s not.

Summing up, this is a fun film with no lesson learned. The ending doesn’t make you think, but neither does it satisfy you. It’s just a… termination. Done. Period. Buried. You just don’t think about it anymore. I’m sure there are underlying themes and all that serious stuff, but the point of this film is not to emphasize all that stuff, but kinda the opposite. It’s more of to take things with a pinch of salt (or pepper, if you’re into that) and just..chill.

Fun film.

My Verdict: 7.5/10 ★★★★★★★½☆☆

End of Post.

EDIT: I just found out that it’s Tilda Swinton’s birthday yesterday, (or technically today) what a coincidence! HAPPY BIRTHDAY YOU LOVELY LADY!!!!

Trailer: Prince of Persia: Sands of Time

Clip first before anything else:

Well, I sorta liked the Zelda one better even though it’s fake and Jake Gyllenhaal-less. Don’t get me wrong, this looks awesome, but I’m not particularly looking forward to it. It’s one more those youtube hopping videos where after you finished watching it, you click on the next interesting video on the related video list.

Meh, I won’t judge any further, cuz I’ve only played the first game for 10 minutes. Even if it turns out bad it won’t hurt me that much. Although it might hurt my trust. My trust in the film industry. YOU MERRY MEN OF JOLLY WOODS SHALL BE MERRY NO MORE!!

I’ll watch a remake of Sinbad anytime though.
